Starting from April 2008 up to September 2009 the project on biodiversity conservation and community based tourism to support socio-economic development of Chon-Kemin Valley was implemented in the territory of Chon-Kemin.

It is necessary to mention that this project was implemented on the base of Agreemetn signed between RDC-Elet and “Oikos onlus” (Italy).

In a period from October up to December 2008 there were arranged preparation works on organizing the training for SNWP “Chon-Kemin” staff and members of local communities. In January 2009 the local organization named “Kol Tor” was established from 18 people – representatives of three villages. The internal Charter was developed for community members who later became registered at Aiyl Okmotu and received a legal form.

In accordance with project activity plan, it was decided to conduct the following varieties of trainings:

1) Training on Environmental Management in Protected Preservations. Trainers were Yury Ivanov (legal framework and hunting regulations), a specialist of Central Hunting Department at the Presidential Property Office, and Mars Amanaliev (environmental management), former head of department at the Environmental Ministry.

2) Two trainers were invited for training in Basic Skills for Tourism Business representing KACBT (Kyrgyz Association of Community Based Tourism): Anara Orozobaeva, Director and Asylbek Rajiev.

3) A teacher of English language Baktygul Kalmambetova was involved to teach English.

In connection to the need for all foresters and game wardens to be in their work areas in March, we decided to deliver training in Environmental Management during the period of February 4 -11, 2009 and during February 16 – 20 in tourism followed by English courses. Thanks to the responsiveness and faithfulness of the participants we managed to complete these training events as scheduled. 30 trainees participated in the Environmental Management training throughout the training (12 representatives of the National Park and 18 community members), 18 local community members and 4-10 National Park staff attended the Tourism Workshop and 16 trainees mostly representing a local community gained English skills. All participants were pleased with the training and expressed their acknowledgements to the trainers and hosts. Following the two training courses we issued certificates to trainees on behalf of the “Oikos” Institute and RDC-Elet. Additionally, we handed over an outfit to best 24 participants including 12 National Park staff and 12 community members.

In August, we purchased and handed over to a local community 2 national Yurts that have been built in the mountains for hosting the tourists. Likewise, upon receipt of the sketches and information from “Oikos” we published leaflets in Russian and English for distribution to tourists.
